You're right, the transmission is not the best. But I've lived through two ZFs and have found that the jerkiness that contibutes to early failure can in part be treated by anticipating a downshift...as if you were driving a manual...just downshift manually when you think you will need it and then wait for the trans to shift down before you apply torque. Like if you have to slow down to 20-30 mph before passing...manually pull the trans down to second gear, or 30 - 40 before passing, pull down to 3rd gear. If you don't, the transmission won't kkep up with your foot, and the engine/turbo will be pulling before the trans is ready, causing a really alarming jerk...and probably doing unknown damage in the process.

If the former owner has kept up with maintenance, you'll probably be OK.
keep in mind that the transmission works fine under hard acceleration...it's just the transition that it seems to have trouble with.

One of the frequent posters on this board, I think Quasi, has some additional advice about valve bodies and such.

All the hype about automatic transmissions that you can shift is exemplified in the ZF...it works quite well in manual shift mode. Just be sensitive to speed versus rpm and your foot position (like you have to be driving a manual) and you'll be OK.
