charcoal canister and vacuum leaks

I've read quite a bit recently about the charcoal canister here and since my '87 9kT is idling high (about 1300-1500) I thought I'd chesk into this area more. I found not only a very dirty canister, but one that was not hooked up correctly. The hose coming from the tank was capped and therefore that inlet to the canister was open. Also the diaphram was not sealing. I opened things up, the canister just slides into the bracket, and found the rubber for the diaphram was simply out of shape. I've attempted a repair that I think will work which is simply super-gluing a piece of construction paper to the rubber to hold it in shape while not being too rigid. I then glued the plastic piece that holds the spring in place and put it back together. I did also clean everything up, including the foam inside that keeps the charcoal in place. I haven't tried it on the car yet, as it is raining cats & dogs here in San Jose, but will as soon as possible & will let you know how it turns out.
By the way, I need some help with abbreviations on this site (such as n/m).
