I have never had a 900, so can't say much about them (I have ridden in a colleague's two 900s and briefly driven some New Generation 900s, but that doesn't really count). However, if you decide a 9000 is the one for you, then given your limitations, bear in mind that from about '90 in Europe and '92 in the US, many 9000s came with traction control. While many people find this useful, and it seems generally reliable, it can be very expensive and difficult to troubleshoot if it goes wrong. Traction Control Limp-Home Mode isn't something you can easily ignore either. It may be a chance you don't feel worth taking.

Also, pre-'92 models are a bit more straightforward for the DIY mechanic, and before about '89 or so, the 9000 had a conventional ignition system with a distributor. Later models have the Direct Ignition system with a cartridge that can have a limited life and is expensive (hundreds of £s/$s to replace), along with an unwillingness to get along with anything but one particular type of NGK spark plug.

I do love my 9000 (a '96 Aero) and do all the work myself with guidance from the Haynes manual and from this board. Be aware that there isn't a Bentley manual for the 9000 (I don't know Bentley, as I think it's a US thing, but they seem highly regarded). The Haynes manual for the 9000 is not one of their best (my Haynes Mini manual was superb!), but it can be invaluable. Along with the experience of others here, it makes most things a DIY prospect.

I'm not trying to scare you off, but rather pointing out that from a DIY point of view, and for someone with a limited budget, it might be better to go for a lower mileage older 9000 than a higher mileage newer one.

Some of the routine procedures you'll need if you start maintaining a 9000 are documented on my web site (link below).

Good luck with whichever car you go for. I don't think either is a bad car.
