I think what happened to my ACC is that first the transistor went out, as the fan would only run on high for about 6 months, and I dragged my feet on fixing it. Then the fan motor died.
So when I was fixing it, I put in a new transistor which was an "also works" option, different from what Quasi specifies. It was smaller and didn't make good contact with the heat sink. Within five minutes of running it (I'm sitting there, in the car, with the fan on low, thinking what a great job I did), I smell burning electronics and the fan will only work on high. Pulled out the fan controller, and the transistor is clearly fried.
So I re-did it, this time with the right transistor ($8 Radio Shack, mailed to my house), and a liberal application of heat conducting paste, and making sure I had *flat* contact between the transistor and the heat sink (proper positioning before soldering), and it has now worked fine for a month. So I'd say give it another go with the transistor, paying particular attention to the heat sink issue. I wouldn't dive into the heater motor at this point, as it really doesn't sound like your problem and it's not a fun job, although you would get a chance to practice any new swear words you might know. Good luck.
