As a quick fix it is a good idea; I did the same thing when mine broke. As a long term solution, however, there are some safety implications. The reason for the strange design of the coupler is that in a front end collision, the passenger cage is very strong, while the front clip is designed to crumple. The engine pushes underneath the passenger cage allowing a controlled deacceleration zone. The coupler is specifically designed to shear off so that the shift rod does hinder the engine's movement.

The fallout is that the coupler, which is basically a piece of rubber with 4 bolts laminated to it, isn't strong enough to last the life of the car, and has to be replaced periodically. It's a fair trade-off for the important function it has.
