Just read an article this past weekend about how a lot of cars that have been in accidents where the air bags have been set off have NOT had the airbags reinstalled. It turns out the Federal government is only interested that NEW cars have air bags - according to this article, there are no federal rules governing replacing air bags in used cars (however, some states may have rules on this). So, again according to this article, lots of airbags don't get replaced, due to the expense (replacement of the steering wheel airbag system in my '91 9000 after an accident cost $3,400!!!). There are even a couple of companies that manufacture "cosmetic airbag covers" that are made to cover the spots where the airbags used to be located. These two companies market primarily to body repair shops. If these cosmetic covers are used, then there are supposed to be labels posted on them that state that there is no airbag inside (the companies supposedly ship the labels with the covers), but you can imagine that these labels don't get posted by a lot of body repair shops!
So it might be worth your while to have your car checked to make sure that the airbags were actually replaced after that accident.
