BAAB - Was there anything the motor was doing before you took it to the machine shop, like using coolant, overheating, etc?
The reason I ask is because almost all B engine heads will have some type of minor surface "cracking" in the cylinders. And most machine shops, not being familiar with the ways of the Swede, will panic and tell you you need a new head. Having been through this before, were it my motor, I'd just tell the shop to complete the rest of the work, and I'd install that head. Been there & done that.
Unless, like I said, there was previous evidence that it was really leaking through the metal of the head.
