Brake pedal hard to depress

Got a bit of a weird one. This just started on Sunday.
On my '78 99 Turbo the brake pedal is very hard to depress. If I give it a hard push it slow down the car. To get it to stop quickly I need to get both feet onto the pedal (and even then the braking performance isn't as good as it should be).
The other thing that I noticed is that now when I press the brake pedal the engine rpm increases. Take my foot off the pedal and the rpm returns to normal (maybe a separate issue).
I've not looked at the car myself yet (it doesn't live at the same place I do), I parked it on Sunday and left it. I plan to start having a look on Saturday, however thought I'd ask you guys to see if you could advise on a first place to look.
