the only really crappy thing about this motor is the bizarre/problematic head bolt set-up and the resulting propensity to blow head gaskets. I had a couple of these, and they ran fine up until the head gaskets would give, and then it was all over in a hurry. Like in the Triumph sedans and TR7 which used the same motor, coolant in the oil killed the rod bearings almost immediately. (Triumph Stags, which had a V8 version of this design, have the same problem. The Dolomite 16v version of this motor, however, even with around 50% more output and the same head fixing arrangement seemed relatively immune. Head cooling problems around the exhaust valves, maybe?). Knew folks who raced TR7s back in the 70s and they would o-ring the block deck and added dowel pins to index the head gasket to the bore centers, and this helped, but did not completely eliminate the problem.
