Larry,
All great points, especially about the Thermostat. I recommend both an 82 degree thermostat and an 82 degree fan contact switch, both are available from Chip Lamb at West of Sweden.
Also, the #4 exhaust valve espcially is very prone to cracking/burning/seat recession which is why I recommended the valve job - important to replace the guides and get the valve height set so that there's room for future adjustment. Also, I have a "service bulletin" (actually I think it is a Jack Lawrence write-up) on cross-drilling the guides for better lubrication to reduce the guide wear which was always a problem. I have seen several engines where somebody threw an non-Sodium exhaust valve in #4 (to replace a burned/cracked one) and of course that didn't last 5,000 miles.
At the end of the day the main thing is keeping it cool and with fresh fluids and keeping the valves adjusted.
Of course the electrics of getting/keeping the cooling fans running are entertaining as well.
At least we have the info from the recent "Vintage Views" on the source for all the water pump parts. I have an electronic copy of the latest service bulletin for the pump, certainly worth doing that while the head is off!
I drove mine to Oneonta for Ed Lorenz picnic yesterday - 7 hours in the 85-90 degree heat at 75-80 mph and the needle never went above the "N", so it can be done!
See you next week (hopefully)!
Gary
