Urethane Steering Rack Bushing Installation

I'm putting my new steering rack bushings in today one way or the other. I'm trying to decide if splitting (cutting) the bushings is a good idea to facilitate install. I have the powerplant out of the car already.
The factory manual doesn't describe bushing replacement (that I could find), it appears to me the best way to install the U bushing is to cut it on the flat side. I feel like if I went to all the effort to slide them on one end, the U bushing still wouldn't fit over the block its supposed to sit in.
Thanks in advance for any input on this!
