Hi James,
Ah - lambda...ok, well then I second Gary's suggestion about the modulating valve. I will say that form personal experience, the O2 sensor is not likely to cause the kind of extreme issue you're having, more like general driveability issues, and those develop gradually as the sensor gets fouled. Heck, even with the sensor wiring completely melted together, you can still drive the car (ask me how I know this - no, don't).
Not to say it can't be the O2 sensor, but Gary pointed out a very likely culprit, which is the modulating valve. In the '78 turbo, it was mounted on the driver's side right next to the radiator. It looks like a little black can, about 2 inches across and 2 tall if I recall, with a hose going to one end, and the other end has two wires going to it.
It is also designed, if I recall (anybody feel free to correct me here) to operate at 50% duty cycle by default (meaning in the absence of correction from the O2 sensor) - if it's not buzzing while your engine is running, your engine would run quite poorly. Check the wires to it, and the hose as well.
regards,
Rowan
