Dan,
Get the wiring diagram and track it down. The pin connections (harness side) that plug into the back of the switch do tend to get loose, and also the plastic tabs that snap the switch/dash/harness connection together tend to get brittle and break leaving the connector loose. So, some overall terminal tensioning and general MacGivering might be needed there. On the other end (at the motor), I seem to remember that they use a big ballast resistor, so check all the connections out there and make sure there's continuity through that resistor.
For the heater core, you will probably have to find a radiator shop that can solder a new core into your existing part. I don't know that I'd trust a used part at this point without doing the same (getting it re-cored).
