i had the same prob.
my friend, darin, added an extension of rubber fuel line from the FP that was just long enough to reach the bottom of the fuel tank.
then he clamped a brass-like fuel filter to the end of that hose after cutting the last bit off thus making room for the added filter. this ensured that the filter was just touching down on the bottom of the tank .
in my mind it is no different than that small inlet to the pickup strainer.
