You are quite correct - the 4 "tabs" where the ends of the grille mount are broken almost as often as the top mount (remember, they used to use a little white plastic washer with a "step" in it so that the grill could "float" to line up with the headlight buckets). There were two types of the aluminum trim strip - later ones had the little overlapping tabs stamped into the ends of them where the earlier ones (probably 75 and 76 - at least my 77 with original grille has the stamped-in tabs). I would think that some enterprising sheet metal guy could easily make the earlier ones if given a sample. I seem to remember seeing a couple of those around here in a box somewhere.....
