Stephen, If the vacuum impulse unit has some sort of internal problem it is possible that it could be repeatedly activating at idle, causing the cold start injector to pulse if you have a lot of vacuum variation, which would make a noise. However, I would think that would cause other problems due to the additional fuel being injected. I guess if possible I'd try replacing the hose and the impulse contact if you have a spare one. The car should run fine without the impulse contact once the engine is warm, so you may be able to isolate whether there's a functional (driveability) issue when cold that would suggest the impulse contact. One other idea - I think that vacuum hose and the coil wire both run through a plastic sheath - is it possible that when the hose is connected that sheath is being pulled close to some other part and rattling against it?
Good Luck!
Gary
