Thanks Gary. I've just replaced the section of soft hose between the original check valve and the tank and that seems to have stopped the leak. When I got the old hose off I saw a very faded printed 5/16 on it so I used new 5/16 ID hose and that fitted snugly on the tank side barb of the check and the tank inlet. I'm guessing it was originally 8mm but 5/16 seems to be fine. Assuming that both barbs on the check valve are the same then the 8mm diesel check valve is the one we need. The metal valves from Dieselitems.com seem to open between 1-2psi so there should be enough pressure in the return line for them to work. I'm going to run with the old valve in place for a while and see what happens.
Re the pressure in the gas tank that soaked you. Do you know what pressure the check valve in the carbon canister line is meant to open at? Its the one in the rear drivers side pillar before the roll over valve. I seem to get a big pressure build up in my tank [1977 2door]and I'm wondering if a new valve would that opens at a lower pressure would help.
