Jeremiah,
The 1970 1.7L Carbureted engine originally had an AC Delco 7953870 distributor. 7953500 and 7953820 were used in 1969 on the same engine. The different part numbers likely refer to slightly different advance curves (vacuum "can" and mechanical springs/weights may be slightly different, but likely any of them could be used). A new one will be hard to come by. I am not sure what the problem is with the old one, but at this point a different used one might have problems as well. If the bushings are worn (evidenced by the shaft wobbling or rocking) then the best bet might be to get it rebuilt - try looking in Hemmings Motor News for a place that does rebuilds. If the advance mechanism is just frozen up (which is common), they can usually be taken apart and cleaned and lubricated. Let me know at little more specific information and we may be able to zero in the best approach for you.
Good Luck!
Gary
