it does not matter which way you turn it, it is not threaded. i was able to remove pumps on two cars by persuading it back and forth until it came free in the direction that turned the farthest. i do not have the correct saab tool but i used a 3/4" square piece of steel that was longer than the diameter of the collar. i held that down to with vice grips then tapped the steel with a mallet (or hammer) this ensured i wasn't destroying the collar :-)
