I agree with Gary. The 99 & 900 turbos were a royal ***** to get off the line with any kind of smoothness. far, far too much torque for the front tires, and it only got worse with the 16v.
As for why the 900 didn't blow by the EMS further down the line, I have no idea. There were no expensive noises heard (been there, done that...), so all I can assume is the turbo driver doesn't know how to drive his or her turbo.
Case in point: I was helping a friend shop for a 900 turbo back in the 8V era, and I was test driving one with the owner in the passenger seat. I was BARELY getting on the throttle, and didn't even try a holeshot, let alone some heavy cornering, and the owner was holding on like he was getting a drive from Jeff Gordon...
