Interesting, one has to wonder why the chain would have broken - they are generally very robust. Did something else sieze? I agree with Doug, pull the valve cover off and have a look in there. You can see the whole valve train and the chain, guides, and tensioner. If you do end up pulling the engine out I can't see not pulling the head, it's only a small additional step at that point and you can see that everything is in order and have the assurance of a new head gasket.
But, that's just me. I have a congenital defect that leads me to fix things that aren't broken :-)
