The posts to this question were all over the board. The "B"motor can readily have its timing chain adjusted, it just the in sito process was never described in the text of the workshop manual. Remove The VC and locate the cam sproket support bracket raising up out of the timing chest, near to the center bolt hole in the center of the cam sproket. This support peice bolts over the upper chain guide, and is held on with two 8mm bolts with a 13 mm head. The upper guide indeed has a adjustment slot in the upper bolt hole position. When you look down as best to see them you will only see the bottom bolt of the two. To adjust the timing chain you will need a 12 point 13 mm off set box wrench that is at least 10 inches total in length and also having an off set depth of 20-22 mm. Hazlett has one and you may find another. By "braile" feed/fish the box werench down the center of the stay braket and "find the upper unseen bolt. Loosen slightly, but do not fully relieve the tension on the bolt. Look down the chest and sight the upper guide and scribe a mark in the cyl head to give a refference tomas where the guide has been. Then with large pry bar lever the top of the upper curved chain guide down towards the exhaust side of the motor. Do not move farther than the thickness of the guide itself 2-4 mm. Then retighten the upper bolt. The bottom bolt has a washer, the sproket support peice and then the upper guide and the direction you pried is clockwise so the lower bolt does not loosen. If you get the wrench caught up around the upper support it will bend a bit in and out. Do not take all the slack out of the chain, sneak up on this adjustment a bit at a time. Hense the scribe mark If you get to rambunctious and the engine whirs and whines from a tight chain, you can use channel locks and raise the upper chain guide up a bit. Find the orange 72 1973 99 manual and fine the metal ruler method for measuring the dimension that the tensioner has moved out to compensate for wear. You will not need to reset cam timing or ignition. Again do not take all the slack out of the chain leave a quarter inch play on the back side of the sprocket, by the upper guide. tap the motor, or rock in gear to move the motor around to test for slack in the chain.
