I followed the linked procedure to restore a severely gunked and rusted 1978 tank removed from the car. Granted I had the large opening for the pump, but it was not needed for adding/removing media for sloshing around. The chemicals were enough, and the baffles would have made that difficult. After the etching point, the metal was bright and clean. This was a LONG job. I finished with the POR-15 treatment, and I kind of wish I didn't. Roger Harris from the vintage side mentioned the possibility of the stuff breaking down over time and possibly making a larger mess down the road. I think keeping fresh gas in the tank would be the best rust and gunk prevention.
