Good morning! The failure you are seeing there is pretty common (at least I've had it happen on several cars) keeping in mind that the plastic part has been sitting with gasoline in it for 40+ years. It is a check valve, but it is in the return line from the fuel distributor to the tank and it is required to prevent the fuel from escaping from the tank via the return line in the aftermath of an accident.
I was able to replace it with a check valve having a metal body which was originally intended for diesel fuel: 5/16" Check Valve Diesel or Gas 8mm One Way Fuel Flow Note that the one I linked here is 5/16" - that was just the smallest one I saw in a quick check, but you may need to measure the diameter of the barbs on the original one and do a more careful search for the correct diameter.
The hardest part is to get the rubber hoses off the old check valve without damaging them, you need to proceed very carefully since the part that goes forward in the car is a crimped-on part of the plastic line assembly and difficult to replace without getting in to a much bigger project.
Good luck with this Spring project!
Gary
