Well, it is running again but boy o boy what a long rope with many knots that had to be untied, one after the other.
Engine did not start when it arrived on a tow truck after some engine work by another shop. Not a puff, no nothing. Starting fluid make it cough and hack and back fire like crazy so I had to start with making sure they had gotten the timing and firing order right. Next I suspected camshaft timing but compression test showed nice and even readings.
Fuel pump relay hot wired with ignition from earlier and I noticed a faint hissing now and then. Pulled injectors out and saw two of them spraying now and then. Dialed down fuel mixture until they stopped spraying. Hook up fuel pressure gauge and noticed 70 Psi system pressure and 60 Psi cold start pressure. Ok, not good but it should at least fire??? Lifting the air door made two injectors spray fairly evenly and two squirting all over the place.
For this engine, new injectors were available and so cheap it was no use pulling out the ol injector cleaner trying to make them work. Didn't really make a difference though.
Spark plugs were black of soot so I stuck a new set in and with that, I actually got the engine running but oh so bad and stinking up the shop like no tomorrow. No matter how I tried to lean or richen, it ran like crap.
Noticed the fuel distributor being from a newer 900 (058 instead of 032) but it should probably run at least. Took it apart and found quite a bit of rust inside and it ran a little bit better afterwards but not good enough.
Advised and had customer buy a proper distributor and new fuel lines instead of the crappy rubber hoses and clamps someone else had installed and with that, the engine started to come alive and run on all cylinders.
Now back to the cold start fuel pressure. Had a good used warm up regulator from a 900 and installed it and with that, I had 30 Psi cold start, 50 running and about 65-70 system pressure. Knocked it down to about 20 psi cold start to help the engine start.
Someone had used plumbers thread tape on the banjo bolts (have no idea why since you have the copper washers) and I think that has made it into the warm up regulator.
Next I tried to fine tune the fuel mixture but O2 sensor was dead and black with soot but a new one fixed that.
Next I noticed that the frequency valve was not buzzing. Had to dig out my old manuals and study the electrical diagrams and check for power and ground and found that someone earlier had swapped the rear defroster relay with the Lambda relay and by swapping them back, I had the valve going and could finally adjust the fuel mix using the test port by relay box.
Still noticed some lag at throttle input when cold and found the enrichment valve solenoid diaphragm broken that should blip the cold start valve. Can't find the valve so that will be for another time.
Next I had to replace all 5 two pin connector housings on engine harness that were more or less broken and loose. Fix some vacuum hoses and some other stuff.
Customer had a new fuel pump relay so after checking all the terminals, I plugged it in and it's working. No clue why it had been hot wired at some point.
Kind of fun making the brain work again trying to remember stuff from 30 years ago but tough when parts are not readily available or pricey.
