I recently got a few heads with a B engine I bought. On one of the heads the cooling passages are simply round and not oval shaped like I'm used to seeing. I'd like to use this head because the other one I got has 2 bent valves, but I'm thinking that the cooling capabilities of this head won't be as good and that it may not be a good idea to use it (the engine is race built with flat top pistons and an MSS cam and will see rally use). I could get 2 new exhaust valves and 2 new guides for about $45 and use the head with better cooling. Any opinions?
Also on that head when I was taking the valves out to inspect them I noticed that under 6 of the lower spring seats there are shims. Five of the shims are thin and one is thick. MSS lists shims to go under the lower valve seat but I'm not sure what they are for. I'm guessing that they are used to keep the compressed spring length the same as on a stock head when the valves and valve seats are re-ground during a valve job (making the valve sit up higher in the head). Does anyone know if I'm right?
