I use one that I got from Harbor Freight for $40 (follow the link below). Its been used on probably 10 to 20 pairs of springs so far and has worked great. I trimmed down the lead screw a little so it would fit a little better, but it isn't necessary to do so. When you use it you just have to put the head of the screw in the top of the fender well, meaning that you can only turn it about 1/8 turn at a time. I usually get it lined up onto the spring, jack up under the lower A-arm to compress the spring, and then tighten the compressor until the spring will come out. The only problem is that you can't put the safety ring on if you're not going to re-install the spring you're pulling because it won't allow you to uncompress the spring enough to remove it from the tool. Harbor Freight also has a hydraulic compressor (item # 47890) that looks pretty similar to the factory SAAB compressor for $80 and it will fit 900/99 front springs. I'm not sure if it's uncompressed length is long enough though, I'd have to measure some springs to find out.
