The fuel pump is much harder to remove on the '79. The 80 is the cinch. It also allows you you to use a filler pump set-up from a 900 if you'd like. This eliminates the possibility of the main pump "running out" when you take a hard left turn with a fairly low level of fuel in the tank.
WIth respect to the accumulator, on the metal tank, it attaches to the tank. with the plastic tank, the easiest method is to turn the acc. horizontally and attach it to the floor boards. This eliminates having to change most of the lines. I'm not sure where the '80 had the accumulator as all the plastic tanks I've used have come from early 900s, which have the accumulator under the right rear seat's floor boads. Good luck. I'm going to be doing this to my present car quite possibly this weekend. Let me know when you decide to attack this project and maybe we can work through it at the same time.
Now, remember that your present tank is probably not lost. What happens is the old gas turns and the rubber on the old fuel pump deteriorates...that's the "oil" you saw. It WILL disolve in gas or another solvent. You could try and to that first. Put in some solvent, swish it around, and then drain the tank again. A lot of the gunk can be wiped out to speed things up. Put some new gas in there and have a few fuel filters on hand for your first 1000 miles. It will clean itself out.
