Monday and Tuesday I spent a few hours cleaning out a guy of his 20 year stash of 99 parts. He just happened to have the two front air intake vents that go behind the front bumper, and they were ten times better than the set I had taken out of the car....mine were broken.
Today I decided to scrub them and give them a fresh coat of silver paint. IMO opinion, they looked real good after painting, almost like new, even though they appeared warped a bit. I played around with the fitment, and they seemed to fit perfectly when installed upside down(there was an unsightly bend at the top when installed the other way). I assumed they were upside down because there was no way to access the screw heads with the bumper on the car. Saab wouldn't make it this difficult to install or remove two meaningless vents, would they? I didn't think so either, but the bumper did have to come off if they were going to fit to my specs, which means totally acceptable, or they go back on the shelf in the basement.
Now came the fun part! '73 bumpers had the bolted brackets inside the engine bay, as opposed to 74 when 8 nuts held the bumper on and access was alot easier. I removed the grille and headlight bezels and thought that was the worst of it...Haha!...there is very limited access to get to some of the bumper bolts inside the engine bay...two are under the radiator, and I also had to remove the air filter housing to access two bolts on the driver side, and had to remove the battery and heat shield to access two bolts on the passenger side...all without marring the paint mind you.
I think I spent two hours taking everything apart, and maybe only an hour putting everything back together. Time to take it for a spin to see if I gained any performance.:)
