Hello all – I have been reading through your posts for the past 2 weeks. I think it’s time for me to jump onboard. Some of you may have seen the 99 on eBay located in Portland, OR a couple weeks ago – the one that is a clone of Brently’s ‘79. Well it’s sitting in the drive with me now. My hope is to get it back on the road very soon. If not maybe BobD will adopt it, can one more fit in his garage? Speaking of BobD, he has told me these engines are bullet-proof. This one might be, but it’s definitely not water-proof. The eBay seller had it listed as a cracked block but no signs of that yet. BobD coached me through trouble-shooting the water pump, and trouble there is. It has been destroyed, so I will be going the EWP route. However, it has other leaks as well. The thermostat housing may be cracked or maybe the gasket is gone. This car sat during the cold snap we had up here last January with only tap water throughout the system. The prior owner had been nursing a water pump leak for about a year, so no anti-freeze meant trouble. At least one freeze plug popped and who knows what else.
BobD gave me some homework last weekend while he was out of town (no idea where…hmmm).
1st: Empty the hydrogenated margarine motor-oil – kerosene flush – and a double change of fresh oil
2nd: Do a compression check.
Well, I got the oil done but the compression test will have to wait until this weekend. I had rented a tester locally and it was broken – so no results. When I do test it I will be trying to hit at least three of Brently’s numbers.
Overall this car is in great shape. If you want to see it, check out eBay item #2486575391. My girlfriend and I moved to Oregon from Rhode Island two years ago. As soon as we arrived we couldn’t believe the classics on the roads here. No rust and no UV damage, so nice.
Anyway, glad to meet you all – I truly hope this car works out.
