Sanding away rust is going to be my next project. Given that this car was mostly driven in the Utah winters and that it is a 99, it has plenty of rust to keep me busy.

As I've mentioned before, I think the body is a downhill/lost cause. To do a "real" restore, I'd need new doors, a new hatch and some serious welding to replace some long sections of rusted body panels.

I've done some bodywork with bondo and have some more to go. However, as this comes to a close, I am looking forward to the final paint scheme. I've considered getting someone to do a respray of the original Anathrasite Grey, but my budget it limited. I've considered a rattle-can job, using the original paint where it is good (hood, roof, um... that's about it) and doing some racing/rally stripes to cover the areas where I've had to sand/grind/bondo/prime. I was even thinking that a two-tone job, split at the waistline would be cool - the rust damage is all confined to the level below the bottom of the windows, so I could just paint the lower half of the car.

Still, I knew that I wanted something cheap and unique. I had a mtn bike that was flat black with gloss black stickers and I always liked the look. Add some ghost flames in gloss black and you'll get the idea that I am mulling over. In hot rod parlance, I'm thinking about doing a rat rod scheme for my Saab (and the concept is really not far off from my reality - drive it how you've got it). I'd sand the body, prime with high-zinc Dupont primer, rattle-can a few coats of flat black, then use pinstriping tape to do some outline flames in gloss black, then mask and spray the flames to get some fade, then clear coat for the finish.

Saab purists will cringe, I am sure, but the body is not something I can save. It will continue to rust and I don't have the cash to fix it. The motor is strong (for now) and I think that the car should last for a few more years. After that, I can part it out or maybe do a restore.
