wondering something about the b waterpump Posted by 79-900t [Email] (#577) [Profile/Gallery] (more from 79-900t) on Tue, 28 Sep 2004 11:50:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Is the main failure with the b waterpump the seals which then leads to damaging the pump on install or removal, or does this pump fail by stirping the gears in normal operation. The design seems pretty good to me with the execption of how difficult it is to replace the seals but when it last for 10+ years and/or 150000+ miles, that seems pretty good to me. The item I wonder more about is roll pin that conects the shaft from the distributer which drives the oil pump beacuse it seems like it would be more likely to fail.
The electric water pump is a consideration since seals are hard to find and I am in need of doing the seals on my 79 900t again. How well does the electric waterpump hold up, I drive about 24K year most of which is on my 79 900t. The Dacies-Craig pump that is suggested says it is good for 2000 hours of contious operation which would be around 100k miles for me. Will it actually reach this or will I see problems after a couple of years? If the pump goes for that long it wouldn't be too bad of a deal, a bit more costly to replace (given things go right with the b waterpump) and maybe a bit more frequently but quicker with no chnace of real problems.
I've done two waterpumps, one went fine and one was botched but otherwise it wasn't too bad (don't have tool which might be why the one was botched). With my parents 85 and 88 900t we've had to replace belts, tighten belts, and replace 3 times in 5 years on the 88 and the 85 was just done before we got the car. Maybe I've just been lucky though.
Just wonder
