Hey!-First let me say I don't mean to intrude on 99 discussions, but I think you guys are more familiar with manual steering racks.
I have a '79 900 EMS man. steering rack which is 3.5 TLL,opposed to standard man. rack of 4.2 TLL...
...it's been a bugger & impossible to find inner tie rods for this thing--the fact it's totally different from the widely avaible power rack makes it frustrating...the rackbar ends are female as opposed to the power which is male...originally,I intended to modify pwr. inner tie rods to fit by boring & tapping to fit the man. rack, but the tap size of M24X1.25(quite hard to find) combined with the complication of contaminating the new tie rod with shavings has made me think again.
I'm at the point now where I think I'm going to cut the male ends off a power rack & weld to the ends of the manual rack, however,I may not get such a good result...such as the threaded ends not being totally flush & straight, but slightly angled or something...I doubt I can get it perfect!-I don't think this (if it ain't perfectly inline) should affect steering geometry due to the balljoints movement;but please correct me if I'm using faulty logic.
Any suggestions or advice will be much appreciated...I'm eager to get this thing installed & I want it tiptop tight & responsive...the inner tie rod balljoints were so sloppy when I got it,I couldn't bring myself to installing it w/o a rebuild...
1986 900t,I contacted West of Sweden trying to find part#89 44 787(tie rod kit) & Chip verified it was indeed NLA & good luck finding some...I found a supposed source in Finland, but asking price was 110 euros each!!!!!
PS
I can't release the pinion from the rackbar...the manual states to simply remove it & no further directions are given...I think the balll bearing outer race is very snug & stubborn to release, the manual states the bearing is part of the pinion assy. and cannot be replaced...I don't want to damage the bearing---any advice on gentle persuasion to get the thing out????
Thank you.
