George, that's a tricky thing. How to fix the "unservicable" item. I have experimented with success. First off, if the either system has failed. it is simply unrepaiable without very specialized equipment. I have however, fixed stuck units using this method. Use boiling water in a pan to dip the regulator in. This will confirm your either system is good or not. Take very close note on the valve position. Even the slightest movement means you may be able to rescue it. A combination of very light taps (very light) and repeated dunks and cool downs can free-up the unit. As you asked, introducing canned lubricant is what is needed while doing this using the straw that comes with them. I also suggest using some carb or brake cleaner to revove the coolant scum build-up. Actually, have you ever tried the product called Super Spray? This actually works best. You need to be very paitent. The slower you go, the better. I've also soaked the units in gas or laquer thinner for a weekend or so before starting. I've broken one with overtaps, and rescued two with experimantation. As with the waterpump, I would suggest using standard waterpump lubricant additive to maintain the valves operation. It turns you coolant a pale green, but I'm old school...the stuff simply works. It is getting a bit hard to find at parts stores, but it is still around. Best of luck.
