Distributor drive gear shimming

I'm in the process of putting the engine for my '80 GLi back together (I want to have it ready for the convention, nothing like getting it done just in time!). I swapped the waterpump and auxilary shaft out becuase the auxilary shaft that was in the engine had some wear where the distributor gear was contacting it. I'm in the process of swapping the matching drive gear onto the distrubotor but I found that there is an excessive amount of shims on the distributor that was in the engine originally. The manual shows 3 (one fiber, 2 steel) but this one has 4 or 5 steel shims and 2 fiber ones. I haven't found anything in the manual specifying shimming the distributor gear, but it would make sense that you might want to in order to get the gear to mesh right. Does anyone know of a procedure for this?
I'm assuming that the wear on the original auxiliary shaft might be due to extra shims pushing the drive gear too hard into the shaft...
