The upper chain guide is a two bolt mount, one slotted. You can loosen the two bolts, adjust the guide and retighten, giving the chain more tension I think. I've never done it myself, but know of it being done and quieting a noisy chain. Factory B-engine manual, page 210-9 has photo showing slotted mount hole. The cam sprocket support arm also mounts by the same two bolts.
I think this may relate to the tensioner having self-adjust steps and when the chain is just shy of stepping it to the next step it can have some slop that moving the guide takes up. The chain rattle is usually just at idle when there is not enough oil pressure to push the tensioner enough?
