What I don't like to hear is something other than a nice hum. SOmetimes they "gurgle" a bit and that can be a sign of a pump not doing all it can. As well, If the car sat for long during its life, there can be goods in the tank that can clog the pick-up tube. This restricts the motor and makes it work extra hard. Since it's working, I'd wait until the next mishap and then knowing what you know now, you can listen closely to the pump and see if it is doing something different. I can tell you that without my knowing about it until too late, my sister drove a car I had given here for over a year keeping it going by tapping on the top of the pump everytime it wouldn't start (who taught her that trick is still a mystery to me.) Finally, the efforts to jar a worn pump into functioning stopped working and I had to drive 4 hours to the open idaho desert to change it out. What I'm saying is the pump can sound great...then not work, then great again. Keep an ear open and look for a spare (a pump from a pre'84 900 will work as well). It may not have anything to do with your problem, mind you, so forking out for new wouldn't be what I would do. Online diagnosis is never surefire.
