Windshields are not easy to come by, unless you find someone who has stripped a few of these cars ... and didn't break them getting them out. The 900 windshield won't work because, although the A-pillar and profile across the top are identical, the lower edge profile on the 900 is deeper. The last time I heard of anyone trying to find a 99 windshield, they were told that there weren't any in the US.
As far as engines, transmissions, etc., most parts are available and the cars are quite reliable. If the transmission is quiet, you can expect to get long life out of it, but you should plan on changing the fluid about once a year. I nursed a '75 99 with a dead third gear synchro for three years, mainly by changing the fluid five times in that period.
In my experience, the CIS injection in SAABs is more reliable than it is in Volvos. I think it has something to do with the fuel pick-up design in the SAAB versus the design in the Volvo, but I've never seen the clogged injector problems in 99s that I've seen in 240 Volvos. The SAAB design tends to do a better job of keeping grit from the tank from getting into the pump.
