I have never liked the dealer installed under dash radios in the later 99s. You really need to take your eyes off the road to look way down and it's a stretch to change channels or adjust the volume. About a year ago I found about a company that makes radios with a separate face plate with a 12' long cord. I knew this is what I wanted for my 1976 99. There is room on the wood-grain strip near the bottom of the dash for the face plate, and it's easier to see and reach. On the later 99s there is not room available behind this location for a normal radio unit.
I have mounted the radio unit under the dash on the passenger side. I did have speakers in the under dash panels, but have switched to under seat speakers. Not sure if the radio mounted where I put it would work with speakers in the under dash panels.
My car had a rear defroster switch right where the face plate is now. This switch was easy to move to a blank location left of the lighter. The fasten seat belt light I can live without.
I also installed under seat speakers bought from the same company. They are great, the sound seems to be coming from much higher up and I do not know if anyone would guess they are under the seat. A couple of strips of Velcro on each speaker and position under the seat and stick to the carpet, works great. My 99 is pre Lambda so no computer under the passenger seat, but I think they would still work if you have a computer.
I bought this radio about a year ago and upon checking the companies web site tonight the unit I just installed may not be available any longer. They offered 2 models when I bought and this was the cheaper unit. It came with a infra red remote control. The other unit, and the only one shown on their web site now, comes with a radio frequency remote which work up to 40' from the car. I have one of these in my 69 Sonett without the face plate even mounted, works great. Both units have 10 disc CD players available, but I am just a radio guy so haven't tried one of these.

You need to buy from a dealer, not direct from the company. I bought from a guy in Vegas and he discounted from list prices.
