Does anyone have a rapid prototyping machine at work? These are getting more and more common in places that do design. There are different kinds (SLS, SLA, FDM, etc). They all produce different finishes and use different base materials. The other thing is that the tollerances usually aren't really tight or controlable. Most are +/- 0.005" but I've had stuff come in thats 0.012" off (that was with SLS).
There are also a lot of different companies that do these processes, for a fee. Some even have online quoting. I've used a few for projects at work and they're not super expensive. I've had some stuff made, maybe 1/4 the volumetric size of the rack bushings, and I think the cost was around $300. That $300 was the base price and I was able to get up to something like 15 parts for the same price, so about $20 per part.
I've also had prototypes built using rapid tooling. They build a soft-tool mold from a CAD file out of aluminium. Its basically the cheapest kind of injection molding but you're still talking thousands of dollars to get each mold built.
Did you get any idea on how much it would cost to machine them? Could I see the CAD models?
