My understanding from my reading 20 yrs ago is that they made changes to the compression ratio and cam (bad news) between the '74 and '75 model years for emissions reasons, but also made the ignition and CIS changeover, which resulted in a net HP gain. The best of both worlds, at least of that vintage, was a -'74 engine and a '75- ignition and FI. I did that exact thing, and it was a VERY lively performer. I wish I still had it. It outperformed a NA 16V 900 easily.
So it's not that the '73-4 cams were hot, the '75- were just 'smog' versions.
