Thom, I'd suggest checking out the condition of your wiring and connections. If any wires are hard or brittle, that is your answer. Start with the wire that runs over to the starter. Inspect your starter wiring as well. Also examine the alternator connector plug. Was the engine bay painted? Check all your grounds. Also check to make sure the fuse block is grounded. If you happen to have the added gauges, A bad volt meter can do this. If you still have those other alternators, you've likely got some good spairs. The Saab alternators are reliable and will last longer than that. Best of luck.
