If pumping the brakes brings back a "normal" pedal, then it is almost definately not a booster. Usually it is a MC. Another way to test (and this is, of course, after checking everywhere for leaks), is to simply apply pressure to the pedal. With constant pressure, it the pedal continues to sink to the floor, even if it does so quite slowly, you either have a leak somewhere or you have bad seals in your master cylinder. As you push on the pedal, the flared "O" ring in the MC flares out more and seals up the cylinder while pushing fluid. If that seal has worn, dried up, cracked, etc. then you will have a leak between the front and back of the cylinder and the pedal keeps moving to the floor. If in the second portion of the MC (the part closest to the firewall) then it will often leak right where the MC touches the booster. If it is in the first portion, it will often not leak externally. There are acually two different circuits at play here, as you have two inlets and two outlets to the later MC and four inlets and outlets on early set-ups ('74 and older). The later models had a splitting joint right near the MC that then took the two lines from the MC and transferred fluid to all four wheels. Anyway, the crux of the issue is that chances are you need a MC. IF you don't see any external leakiing at the wheels or line joints then get a MC and hope it solves your problem.
