You don't say what year the car is, but I think all 99 automatics are the same. I'm not sure what year Saab went to the BW-37, but I think the design is pretty much the same through the 99s. Many years later they finally redesigned the pinion seal to have a drip gap between two seals, but the BW-35 has a single-lip seal between the diff and the transmission with no place for a differential fluid leak to go except into the transmission. EP-80 and ATF don't mix well.

I worked for a dealer in '74-5 and every autotragic car we sold came back in about the first 1000 miles with heavy gear oil from the differential getting past the single-lip seal into the transmission. Apparently the seal would develop a flat spot while sitting on the dealer's lot awaiting a sale.

We had a Chevy mechanic who knew automatics well, and George did all the rebuilds. I have avoided ever getting involved with automatics of any kind, so I can't answer your question directly. I can rebuild a standard transmission, but won't touch automatics except to convert them to manuals.

(I recently read that even now Saab charges a huge premium for new automatic transmission cars ... a manual is considered standard.)

Your friend could try a full fluid change (including the torque converter), but I wouldn't guarantee that will cure the problem.

ATF is amazing stuff. I rebuilt a Sonett transmission last summer that had sat for many years (last registered in '88). The car was driven a bit after we got it running and when I checked the transmission fluid, it was rust colored. I drained it, put in three quarts of ATF and raised the front end off the ground. Then I ran the car in fourth gear at about 1500 rpm for about an hour. When I disassembled the transmission, the inside of it was absolutely clean of rust. There was some sign of rust pitting on some of the gears, so the life of that box might be limited. rust breaks down the surface hardening on the gear teeth.
