Please listen to the following problem, I am not able to solve it since a long time. I bought a restored 1977 Saab 99 GLE, which looks and drives like new. Driving the car home I had severe electricity problems, the battery just did not seem to have enough capacity to start the car after a short brake. Since we were with 2 cars, simply changing the batteries brought us home.
Not long after that the battery seemed to be dead, although the former owner told us that the battery had just been replaced. A few months later the orange charge light started to burn. The alternator, which was replaced during the restoration 6 months ago, seemed to be malfunctioning because it gave only 12 Volts. I changed the alternator and the problem was gone (14 Volts).
A few months later I was driving and all of a sudden the charge light was starting to burn again, and 45 minutes later we called the emergency service. Their diagnoses was that the alternator was bad, by giving electricity to the yellow wire the could temporary restore it (?). The alternator now temporary giving 12,5 Volts.
I drove home, changed the alternator by a new one but the problem stayed, the altornator not giving more than 13 Volts. Not much later the charge light went on and the same problem was there. I tried to get home when all of a sudden all electricity was gone and the engine was dead. I stopped the car and the alternator was overheated, with the grey wire isolation starting to melt away. I got towed home and tried to make a good diagnoses. I had a new alternator again ..... because this time I was very sure the alternator was not OK of course. Only not knowing why. I started the car, without problems, but after a few minutes the alternator was so hot I could hardly touch it. Even hotter than the engine. I turned off the engine and took off the battery cable ... and that is were I am now.

Does anybody have a clue how to solve this problem???? I am desperate ....

Thomas
