you need to either have a tab welded to the cover or you have to build something up with JB weld or what-have-you. You need that bearing. (get rid of the bearing? are you serious?)
If you choose the epoxy "weld" route, you'll have to machine it flat to ensure a good seal. I've seen this done a number of times with great success. Welding the tab is probably best and wouldn't run more than a few bucks at the right shop.
