B turbo head differences: different cam (8366361), sodium cooled exhaust valves, and better intake valves. At some point all H engine valves were of this type (at least for US cars).
The waterpump is NOT a major design problem with these engines. Improper repair IS. I can send you the Saab tech bulletin procedure covering this. I've replaced 6 pumps and never had a problem. Cracked heads are also NOT a problem unless you run the water low. The water bottle is the problem; too small and too low. Just running a quart low is enough to cause air to get inhaled into the head. Even after an overheating episode, the crack may not appear for months. Symptoms: misses on one cylinder (usually #2 or 3) when cold, funny smelling exhaust fumes, and goes away when warmed up. I think any water in the oil would be the head gasket or warped head (in which case toss it).
The B engine block and bottom ends are bullet proof unless run without oil or overheated to the lock up point.
B engine longevity: We had a '75 sedan that was passed around 4 family members before being retired with over 400K miles (the speedo broke at 380K). One engine rebuild at 180K. 3 water pumps. Same cylinder head. Change the oil every 3K miles, keep them watered, and they run forever. The gearbox is another story.
