two choices for valve tappets: holes or no holes?

I am in the middle of rebuilding my cylinder head on a 1979 SAAB 99 (due to broken spring). When I took apart my two spare heads I see that the valve tappets are different. On two of them (including the head in the car), the tappets have two holes, 180 degrees apart through the side of the tappet, while the other engine has no holes.
Which ones should I use? is there a difference? neither of my manuals mention the holes, and none of the drawings show them in enough detail.
I would guess that they are there to help oil flow around the tappet and splash the valve stem and spring...
Thanks,
Jon
