You'll need one of these tools (pictured below). I had to replace my '90 900 cylinder, and I think the job is very similar to yours, but not sure. In my case the key would just go round and round and round, and if I pressed down hard while turning the key, it would turn the ignition switch enough to get it to position 1 & 2, but I couldn't get it to turn the starter on. In my case, the job wasn't too bad. It was my first time to do the job and it took a couple hours. The tool pictured below is a must (assuming you have the same weird, 3-winged bolts, which I think you do). You can get this tool on the Bay of E.
