I have owned 99's since '85. First car was a normally aspirated '80 gli that I converted to a turbo/five speed in '92. Car was ass ended in '96. Second 99 is another '80 two door with a 16vt/5 speed. I love driving the 99. I also own an 88 spg. For kick in the pants fun the 99 wins hands down. This car is driven every day, weekends, skiing trips in B.C. and throughout the Northwest in all kinds of road conditions: salt, rain, snow, gravel, sanded winter roads--whatever is out there. I would lose out big time if I totaled the car given all the work I have done but it is too much fun to drive. If it ever became a driveway art piece it wouldn't be worth having. 99 parts are not impossible to find. Many parts are still available from the dealer and lots come up on ebay for peanuts all the time. I have laid in a stash of parts to keep the parts question mute. I have several friends who love their 99's and use them as I do. Craig just finished his revival of a 99turbo. So go for it. It is a damn tough car that is quite fun to drive if the suspension is sorted out and the engine is sound.
